SVA MFAVN THESIS BRAND IDENTITY
For the 2023 SVA MFA Visual Narrative thesis exhibition, I was in charge of defining the visual brand identity for the show. After brainstorming with my peers, I crafted this concept that encapsulates the fun, creative energy my class had. On top of the branding, I also created many promotional materials, such as the poster and email templates.
Shown here are excerpts from the gallery guide and the digital mailer.
Also featured are comics about our class cat mascot made by Justin Altman and Sean Mac, and the project page for “Kid Stardust” by Rafael Pearl.
EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION
Activism is at the core of my storytelling, so naturally I also enjoy creating work to amplify articles that speak on topics I find important, particularly climate change and social politics.
DIVERSIFY OUR NARRATIVE
Diversify Our Narrative is a small nonprofit group of college students working towards adding more inclusivity and diversity in schools’ curriculum. As a designer, I put together Instagram posts written by my colleagues to post to their page and spread the word about important current events.
DEAD GIRL DREAMS
Dead Girl Dreams was my thesis project for the MFA Visual Narrative program at the School of Visual Arts. It is the first part of a larger graphic novel. The story tackles themes of generational trauma, feminism, and ghosts. Shown here are some pages taken from the special exhibition edition.
After becoming plagued by strange dreams, timid teenager Codi Crane’s childhood best friend, Lia, suddenly goes missing. As the thin line between dream and reality becomes increasingly blurred, Codi must uncover the sinister truth behind Lia’s disappearance before she meets the same fate.
RESTAURANT BRANDING
A local restaurant reached out to me to revamp their branding. Their name, “Rong Bien,” which means “seaweed” in Vietnamese, was the core of my brand concept. I used photos of real seaweed to create delicate illustrations that decorate the menu and serve as a logomark while opting to keep the orignal logotype. The font was chosen due to its accessibility and Vietnamese characters.
SHORT STORIES
Here is a collection of excerpts from various short stories I’ve written over the years. My favorite way to share these is by getting them professionally risograph printed and distributing them at comic festivals. Keep an eye out for these bad boys at your local zine fest!
SOMETIMES I SEE YOU
Based on events in my own life, this story explores the situations someone imagine going through when they suddenly come face to face with someone who wronged them.
MRS. TODD’S SHORTCUTThis is an adaptation of Steven King's short story of the same name with various changes made, such as making the main characters all women and avoiding animal deaths.
SUPERDEADBased on a prompt requiring I start bthe comic with, "every great love story begins with a murder," this story won first place in the 2021 Platform Comics Short Story Competition.
BOD Inspired by thoughts plaguing my mind after weight gain and how it made me see the world differently.
AVALARA CRUSH
I worked with COLOR Creative as the main designer on the team behind branding the Avalara CRUSH Global event, a virtual conference focused on the impacts of changing government policy and accelerating technology. We created guidelines to follow and advertisements for them to post to promote the event. Shown here are pages from the brand guide I created for internal use.
ZOMBIE BOYFRIEND
This motion comic utilizes the horror of zombies as a metaphor for toxic relationships. Often toxicity and abuse cause cycles that are nearly impossible to break free from. The comic focuses on themes of acceptance, moving on, death, and heartbreak.
VMWARE INTERACTIVE MURAL
This project is an interactive experience illustrating the endless possibilities of a futuristic, high tech city. I was in charge of the illustration of the city and creation of the its coolest features, like decorative flower boxes and cute pups. The full mural can be shown at conferences, executive centers, and on personal devices.
